Alegría - the Festival of Joy












Mahatma Education Society's Pillai Group of Institutions proudly presents 'Alegría - the Festival of Joy' from the 3rd of Februaryto the 7th of February 2015 at Dr. K. M. VasudevanPillai Campus, New Panvel.
Alegría which takes its name from the Spanish word for “Joy” attracts a crowd of more than 40,000 people every year and is highlighted by dance and music competitions, treasure hunts, technical and literary events, workshops, fashion shows,sporting events and community service initiatives. Through these activities the festival aims to showcase the wonderful and sometimes hidden talent that exists within the student population.
Previous years of the festival have witnessed celebrity appearances by popular actors JackkyBhagnani, Ran Vijay Singh, Zayed Khan, Elli Avram, Chandrachur Singh, Suresh Menon, former Miss India Worlds RakulPreet Singh and ParvathyOmnakuttan and award winning sports personalities BhaichungBhutia and AshwiniPonnappa. But arguably the most exciting parts of the festival have been the sensational musical performances by YoYo Honey Singh, Bollywood superstarFarhanAkhtarDJ Suketuand international artistes such as the award-winning Romanian pop band Akcent and Tomorrowland’s resident DJ YVES V. Each of these events has individually attracted a crowd of close to ten thousand people. Alegría is also known for its advertising, media and promotional activities that are unrivalled in the college festival domain. This array of celebrities, artists and promotional activities are just some of the reasons why Alegría has been mentioned as one of the biggest college festivals in India by India Today Magazine.
This year the festival will be highlighted by a series of mind blowing live performances by the Bollywood musical legendsVishal and Shekhar, Grammy Nominated DJs Sultan & Ned Shepherd, one of India’s foremost names in dance music,Nikhil Chinapa and the king of Bollywood mash-ups DJ Chetas. There will be numerous other celebrity appearances throughout the festival in addition to the terrific line-up of musical performances.
The festival kick started today, 28th January 2015, at the Pillai Campus with the unveiling of the theme “Celebrating more than 100 years of Hollywood cinema” where the students had a flash mob and creatively introduced the theme to an audience of more than 8000 students who had gathered around the Quad area to witness the same. Students dressed as various Hollywood actors and performed some daring stunts and presented a preview of this exciting festival. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Daphne Pillai, Chairperson, Mahatma Education Society and Rector of the Campus, said ‘Alegria - the Festival of Joy’ is a synergy of the youth creativity and talent quotient. Pillaiites work tirelessly, striving each year to out-do, none other than themselves, bringing in new creative ideas and events. Their dedication and hard work will definitely show on stage.’
Mahatma Education Society was established in 1970 with the aim of bringing about social and economic change through the proactive personal development of every child that came into its fold. Today MES runs 48 institutions in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai all affiliated and accredited with competent authorities in the field of education like the University of Mumbai, AICTE, NAAC, IBO, etc.
